Distinctives
Here's what sets Steamroller apart:
1. Stainless Steel Construction
Steamroller's first and most conspicuous distinctive is its primary material. Everything is stainless steel except the handles and center pipe plastic end caps! Most parts are made from 304 stainless steel, and some parts, like the screws, are 18/8. We hope our composter will be passed down generationally, but if not, there are no large tumblers that will sit for years and years in a landfill or break down into microplastic pieces.
2. Uncompromisingly Non-Toxic
This is one of things we're most proud of!
Who wants to eat chemicals with their food? Some of the leading composters on the market today make their tumblers out of polypropylene. Although one of the more stable plastics, polypropylene has been shown to leach fillers, plasticizers, and other additives. This leaching is only made worse in the heat! Imagine what could be added to your compost and potentially to the food you are growing! And even if you're not adding the compost to your crops, these toxins will eventually find their way into the environment.
Additionally, we decided not to insulate our composter with polyethylene foam. Although polyethylene is another relatively safe plastic, it poses the same problems as polypropylene. Steamroller has less need of insulation for two reasons. One, its unique vent design allows it to achieve hot composting status more easily. And two, instead of dual chambers, its single chamber holds more waste material, thereby generating more heat!
Even the wood handles are waterproofed with a marine-grade wood varnish from Earth Safe Finishes! This product is low-VOC and has no heavy metals!
3. Family-owned
When you buy from Steamroller Composters, you're not only getting a quality product, you're also supporting us! From design all the way down to shipping, we've had a hand in it. We're real people who love God, each other, and the earth. And because we're walking our own health journey, we understand some of the concerns you might have about your own health. We truly want to hear your questions and concerns and figure out how we can best help your family!
4. Made in the USA
We're just as concerned about our economy as you are, and we would much rather support our own citizens first! All the sheet metal for our composter comes from a USA-based company.
